Sliding doors are the right choice when the room is too narrow for a hinged swing — Wibsey box rooms, the back bedrooms of Heaton semis, narrow Frizinghall returns. They're also the right call for wall-to-wall runs in modern Apperley Bridge new-builds, where the clean line floor-to-ceiling reads as architectural rather than added-on. If you've a wall over two metres wide and you want to use every inch of it, sliding doors are how.
Sliding wardrobes for Bradford homes
Sliding doors earn their place in exactly the rooms Bradford has most of. In Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a wall-to-wall run carries floor-to-ceiling storage across the long wall opposite the chimney breast, where hinged doors would need swing space the room does not have. In the 1930s semi belt, the tight back box room is the classic sliding job: full-height storage on one wall with no door arc eating the floor.
The catch in older Bradford houses is the walls. Terrace and pre-war walls lean and bow, so a sliding run has to be scribed to them or the gaps show. We measure the actual room, build to it in our West Yorkshire workshop, and scribe the end panels on site rather than hiding the lean behind filler strips.

How wide does the wall need to be for sliding doors?
Two metres is the practical minimum for a two-door run. Anything narrower works better as a single hinged door or as alcove cabinetry. Beyond that we're comfortable scaling up to wall-to-wall runs of four metres or more.
Can sliding doors work in a Victorian terrace?
Yes — we've fitted sliding door wardrobes in Frizinghall and Heaton terraces where the principal bedroom has a chimney breast at one end. The slide runs along the long wall opposite. We scribe the end panels to whatever the original skirting and picture rail are doing. Sliding gives you full-height storage without the door swing eating the floor.
Are sliding doors quieter than hinged?
Modern soft-close sliding hardware is near-silent. The trade-off is access — you can only see half the run at a time, so the internal fit-out is what makes sliding doors work day-to-day. We plan that with you at the design visit.
Do you fit floor-to-ceiling sliding doors?
Standard. We measure the actual room height and run the doors to within ten millimetres of the ceiling. The closer the doors run to the ceiling, the more storage sits above hanging height.
