The right pick for the right room.
If your house has a chimney breast running up the principal bedroom wall, the alcoves either side are almost certainly the right place for your wardrobes. Standard freestanding wardrobes don't fit alcoves cleanly — the depth and the recess always fight. Fitted alcove wardrobes scribed to the original walls solve the storage problem and visually frame the chimney breast as the architectural feature it is. We've built more chimney-breast alcove wardrobes than we can count — Frizinghall Victorian end-of-terraces, Manningham four-storey 19th-century houses, Heaton mid-Victorian terraces, Saltaire stone homes, the inner Bradford terraces of Bowling and Manningham. They're a Bradford specialism. If your bedroom has the chimney breast, the answer is almost always alcove pairs.

On this style, the things customers ask first.
How deep are most Bradford chimney-breast alcoves?
Sixty to ninety centimetres deep is typical in Bradford Victorian terraces — deeper in the four-storey Frizinghall and Manningham houses, shallower in the smaller Bowling and inner-Bradford terraces. We measure on the day; nothing about the alcove depth changes the price.
Can you scribe alcove wardrobes to picture rails and cornice?
Standard. The end panels notch around any picture rail or original cornice, and the top of the wardrobe scribes to whatever the original ceiling line is doing. The wardrobe reads as part of the room, not added on.
Should alcove wardrobes go to the ceiling?
Almost always yes. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes give you a metre of extra storage at the top — useful for luggage, off-season clothes, hat boxes. Stopping short of the ceiling leaves a dust shelf and a visual gap that flattens the architecture.
Do you handle the chimney breast itself?
We don't touch the chimney breast — it stays as it is. The wardrobes flank it, framing it as the architectural feature. If you want a TV recessed into the chimney breast that's a separate trade; we work alongside if needed.
What if the alcoves are different widths?
Common in Bradford terraces — the original builders weren't symmetrical. We design each alcove cabinet to its own dimensions; the door fronts are still visually balanced even if the internals are slightly different. Each wardrobe scribes to its own walls.
Bradford, the wider district, and the towns across the moor.
We do most of our work within a fifteen-minute drive of the workshop — Shipley, Heaton, Frizinghall, Saltaire, Wibsey. We travel further for larger projects across West Yorkshire.
